the caf qualification process began preliminary round played on 13 october , 17 november 2007 narrow field 48 teams, , 12 groups of 4 teams drawn in durban in november 2007.
the 12 groups winners , 8 best runners-up advanced next stage. procedure complicated due 2 of groups being reduced 3 teams due withdrawal of eritrea (before commencement of group) , exclusion of ethiopia (which saw results annulled). result, comparison of 12 runners-up did not include results against teams finishing fourth in 4-team groups.
the remaining 20 teams placed in 5 groups of 4 teams @ draw held in zürich on 22 october 2008. winners of these groups qualified world cup finals.
the qualifying competition 2010 world cup combined qualification process 2010 african cup of nations. since south africa hosting world cup, automatically qualified tournament, although (unlike hosts in previous qualifying tournaments since 1938) played in qualifiers facilitate use of same set of qualifying matches 2010 african cup of nations.
