its diet consists of leaves, seeds, cones, buds, sprouts, nuts, berries , bird eggs , nestlings. when alder , birch catkins plentiful, squirrel may store them winter in old woodpecker holes or similar nooks.


reproduction

they mate in spring. in southern finland first mating season begins in late march, second mating season occurring in april. after gestation period of 5 weeks, female gives birth litter of 2 or 3 young, each weighing 5 grams. preferentially build nest in holes made woodpeckers, may nest in birdhouses if size of entrance appropriate. nest consists of pile of soft materials (preferably soft beard lichen) squirrel burrows. can live 5 years.

they favour old forests mix of conifers , deciduous trees. nocturnal, being active late in evening, although females young may feed during day. not hibernate, in winter may sleep continuously several days. shy , nocturnal animals, seldom seen. common sign of presence droppings, resemble orange-yellow rice grains , found beneath or on top of nest.
