in 2010, tomlinson auditioned seventh series of singing competition x factor. failed progress boys category @ judges houses but, after suggestion nicole scherzinger, guest judge, during bootcamp stage of competition @ wembley arena, london in july 2010, put niall horan, zayn malik, liam payne , harry styles form five-piece boy band, qualifying groups category. subsequently, group got 2 weeks know each other , practise. styles came name 1 direction. qualifying song @ judges houses , first song group 1 direction sang acoustic version of torn natalie imbruglia. simon cowell later commented performance convinced him group confident, fun, gang of friends , kind of fearless well. within first 4 weeks of live shows, cowell s last act in competition. group gained popularity in uk.

in 2015, tomlinson created own record label, triple strings ltd, imprint of current label syco. reported working simon cowell create girl band , held auditions in 2015.


one direction has planned hiatus starting in march 2016 pursue individual projects. during hiatus, tomlinson has plans continue songwriting fellow band member liam payne. busy mentoring , managing nameless girl group.


tomlinson , american dj steve aoki released collaborative single hold on on 10 december 2016. tomlinson , aoki performed song live first time on x factor uk season finale on day of release. tomlinson dedicated song , performance late mother. in july 2017, tomlinson released single featuring bebe rexha , digital farm animals, preceding debut studio album via own record label, triple string. later, announced tomlinson had signed record deal epic records. in interview bbc music, tomlinson said lyrically debut album inspired arctic monkeys , oasis. declared:
