the marble statue located on indiana avenue nw, in front of old district of columbia city hall in judiciary square neighborhood. measures 7.3 feet (2.2 m) high 2.9 feet (0.88 m) wide while granite base measures 6.4 feet (2.0 m) high , 7 feet (2.1 m) wide. statue portrays abraham lincoln standing, wearing long coat bow tie , waistcoat. left hand rests on fasces while right arm side. lincoln s partially open right hand points ground looks left. right hand replaced @ point , new 1 considered large scale. sword or scroll hung right side, missing. two-tiered base consists of rectangle on top of lower square-shaped foundation.
the statue stood on 18-foot (5.5 m) high marble column atop 6-foot (1.8 m) high octagonal base. reporter asked lot flannery why statue set on such high pedestal. responded: lived through days , nights of gloom following assassination. every 1 else, personal lamentation. , when fell me carve , erect statue resolved , did place high no assassin s hand ever again strike him down.
