docks

docks have existed or still exist in complex include:


north dock

the north dock created fulfil increasing shipping demands nearby metals industry. north dock created diverting river tawe cutting new direct course within meander section near estuary. old course of river became new dock , work completed in 1852. secluded , poorly lit, area around north dock popular prostitutes , clients, until lighting improved following drowning of selina rushbrook in lock gate in 1907.the north dock closed in 1930 after development of new larger docks on east side of river tawe made north dock obsolete. north dock has since been filled in , parc tawe retail complex built on site in late 1980s.


south dock

construction began on south dock in 1852 private company. built on site west of river tawe, south of north dock , not completed until 1859. south dock closed in 1971 , redeveloped in 1980s. dock became swansea marina , land around dock developed maritime quarter residential area.


prince of wales dock

the swansea harbour trust began constructing prince of wales dock in 1879 on fabian s bay east of river tawe. when construction completed, prince of wales dock opened on 18 october 1881 edward, prince of wales, , extended in 1898 present size of 27 acres (11 ha). usage of prince of wales dock declined throughout latter half of 20th century. prince of wales dock being redeveloped prince of wales marina 500 berths. new channel sea lock , holding basin under construction link prince of wales dock directly river tawe. new wakeboarding facility opened in prince of wales dock in 2010.


king s dock

work began on king s dock in 1905 meet growing demand of tinplate exports local area. king s dock constructed larger dock prince of wales on south side of prince of wales dock , covers 72 acres (29 ha). construction complete 1909. king s dock principal dock in port of swansea still in use today cargo operations.


queen s dock

at same time king s dock being built, breakwater constructed further south of king s dock enclosed large body of water covering 151 acres (61 ha). body of water opened in 1920 queen s dock after oil handling facilities built handle imports nearby bp oil refinery @ llandarcy , petrochemical plant @ baglan bay. usage of queen s dock reached peak in 1950s when oil imports , exports reached around 8 million tonnes per year. since closure of oil plants @ baglan bay , llandarcy, queen s dock rendered obsolete oil handling facility. queen s dock used mussel farming.
