wesleyans part of life of melbourne beginning of european settlement. first christian worship service in melbourne led henry reed, businessman , wesleyan lay preacher launceston, tasmania. first service ordained christian minister in melbourne led joseph orton, wesleyan superintendent of tasmania, on 24 april 1836. joseph orton had been strong opponent of slavery in jamaica, imprisoned views. in tasmania, equally strong critic of mistreatment of aboriginal people.

the present wesley church, in lonsdale street built in 1858. superintendent, daniel draper, proposed grand gothic design high quality architecture. design criticised many wesleyans ornate, gothic , anglican wesleyan church. however, draper s design prevailed. foundation stone laid on 2 december 1857, , church opened on 26 august 1858.


this church central congregation of wesleyan church victoria, conferences met, , ministers ordained. located in poor part of melbourne, , pioneered many initiatives in community service. in 1880s, team of biblewomen appointed work people experiencing serious poverty. 1 of these mrs varcoe, established livingstone house, home homeless boys in drummond st, carlton.


in 1869, wesley church appointed moy ling begin chinese-speaking congregation in little bourke street. named gospel hall .


in 1893, during acute depression followed bank crash of 1891, alexander robert edgar appointed minister, expectation develop city mission , first superintendent. wesley became base central methodist mission, called wesley mission victoria, grew 1 of melbourne s largest non-profit social welfare agencies. headquarters on site adjoin church. edgar began pleasant sunday afternoon , major speakers speak important public questions.

wesley church became congregation of uniting church in australia in 1977, did methodist churches in australia.


in 2000, both congregation , mission board became polarised on proposals establish primary care health facility in grounds, have included option of supervised drug injection. result of public dispute, synod of victoria separated mission congregation in 2001. function 2 separate bodies.


since 2001, wesley congregation has become cross-cultural, including members many asian cultures. participation has been encouraged previous ministers, jason kioa , late rev dr douglas miller. wesley church s website describes worship , theological style orthodox biblical teaching, classical reformed worship, , cross-cultural lifestyle .
