3 january – prime minister gordon brown announced full body scanners introduced @ uk airports following failed attack on northwest airlines flight 253 on 25 december 2009.
5 january – country once again deluged heavy snowfall endured worst cold spell since winter of 1981–82.
10 january – sunday mirror defence correspondent rupert hamer killed in explosion in afghanistan, ministry of defence confirmed.
