political career

in 2014, monsef had been offered job in afghanistan, unable enter country because of security concerns. went iran work on relief efforts afghan refugees, encouraged focus on political endeavours. returned canada, , ran mayor of peterborough in 2014, finishing close second. later same year, chosen represent liberal party in upcoming federal election. elected on october 19, 2015, 43.8% of vote.


monsef appointed minister of democratic institutions in justin trudeau s cabinet on november 4, 2015. has variously been referred second- or fourth-youngest minister ever appointed cabinet. according hill times, monsef named president of queen s privy council in canada although unclear @ time whether had been sworn office. monsef has described position largely ceremonial. parliamentary website subsequently indicated had assumed position on november 4.

handling of portfolio

on may 10, 2016, monsef gave notice in house of commons of government s plans composition of special committee on electoral reform, have ten members—six members of liberal party, 3 members conservative party, , 1 member new democratic party. attracted immediate controversy, government possessed majority of committee seats , theoretically recommend alterations electoral system without support of other party. well, green party , bloc québécois objected lack of voting representation on committee, although invited attend meetings.


on june 2, 2016, liberal government reversed course, , both trudeau , monsef advised support nathan cullen s motion composition of committee, instead have twelve members—five liberals, 3 conservatives, 2 new democrats, , 1 member each of bloc québécois , green party.

monsef has been criticized stating born in afghanistan, when in fact born in iran. when revealed in september 2016, commentators pointed out lead revocation of canadian citizenship , potential deportation, while others have criticized absurdity of present law or decried importation of birtherism canadian politics. in interview @ time, former mp dean del mastro said political workers in 2014 municipal , 2015 federal campaigns knew not born in afghanistan, chose not make issue of it.


in october 2016, office revealed had travelled iran pilgrimage visas in afghan passport in 2010, 2013 , 2014 in order visit imam reza shrine in mashhad. type of visa single entry iran , not allow holder work, previous admissions had crossed on afghanistan , in 2014, working iran-based charity @ time, have caught attention of iranian authorities. in 2014 interview in peterborough, monsef admitted wanted trip remain hush-hush.
