Risk factors Tuberculosis



a number of factors make people more susceptible tb infections. important risk factor globally hiv; 13% of people tb infected virus. particular problem in sub-saharan africa, rates of hiv high. of people without hiv infected tuberculosis, 5–10% develop active disease during lifetimes; in contrast, 30% of coinfected hiv develop active disease.


tuberculosis closely linked both overcrowding , malnutrition, making 1 of principal diseases of poverty. @ high risk include: people inject illicit drugs, inhabitants , employees of locales vulnerable people gather (e.g. prisons , homeless shelters), medically underprivileged , resource-poor communities, high-risk ethnic minorities, children in close contact high-risk category patients, , health-care providers serving these patients.


chronic lung disease significant risk factor. silicosis increases risk 30-fold. smoke cigarettes have twice risk of tb compared nonsmokers.


other disease states can increase risk of developing tuberculosis. these include alcoholism , diabetes mellitus (three-fold increase).


certain medications, such corticosteroids , infliximab (an anti-αtnf monoclonal antibody), becoming increasingly important risk factors, in developed world.


genetic susceptibility exists, overall importance remains undefined.
