the entrance of alley memorial complex framed 2 statues of angels, referred angels of sorrow. angels represent guardians of souls of starved. in centre of alley, 24 millstones (the millstones of destiny) set in circle , carry dual meaning. on 1 hand, symbolize source of food , life. on other hand, represent 24-hour clock, reminding 24,000 human lives ground death daily during holodomor. haunting statue of young girl clutching handful of wheat stands in middle of alley. statue, named bitter memory of childhood, dedicated vulnerable victims of starvation – children. picking wheat left on collective farm fields after reaping considered crime , punishable 10 years of imprisonment or death. paving leading centre of memorial , hall of memory symbolizes highly fertile black soils of ukraine. central part of memorial white, 30-meter high candle-shaped monument, known candle of memory. monument decorated glass crosses of different sizes arranged in ukrainian folk embroidery pattern. crosses symbolize souls of famines’ victims, young , old. bronze figures of storks soaring base of monument represent rebirth of ukrainian nation.

below ground well-conceived hall of memory. in hall, visitors have opportunity commemorate famines victims lighting candle , ringing bell. 20-minute educational film ukrainian famines projected on walls of hall. collection of artefacts dating famines displayed. these include period farm equipment, agricultural tools , household items. visitors have opportunity browse volumes of national memory book of famine’s victims of 1932-1933 , provide information relatives died of starvation in ukraine.
the hall of memory leads visitors black board alley. symbolic black boards document names of ukrainian towns , villages had suffered during dark years of famines. names of 14 thousand villages , towns of ukraine engraved on boards, have become 1 of striking symbols of holodomor.
