by 1820 pickersgill had become sufficiently successful in business purchase house had been renting, , lived there remainder of life. business success allowed become active in addressing social issues such housing, job placement, , financial aid disadvantaged women, decades before these issues became prominent concerns in society. impartial female humane society had been established needy baltimore families educating children, , destitute women find employment. pickersgill served president of society 1828 1851, , under presidency home aged women opened in west baltimore in 1851 after long planning , construction process. following tenure president, home aged men established adjacent women s home in 1869. in 1959 2 homes combined , moved west baltimore towson, maryland, , in 1962 new facility named pickersgill retirement community in honor of woman had been instrumental in creation.


pickersgill died on october 4, 1857, , buried in loudon park cemetery in southwest baltimore. daughter caroline erected monument her, , later genealogical heritage organization united states daughters of 1812 , star spangled banner flag house association, had organized save , preserve flag house in 1927, placed bronze plaque @ foot of grave.
