1909–1944

in 1909, morris rosenberg, company s founder, began cleaning shopkeepers windows in san francisco, ca. company took name american building maintenance in 1913 , acquired easterday janitorial supply company in 1927.

in 1920s , 1930s, abm grew business on west coast offering annual cleaning contracts businesses. in 1921, abm became first janitorial contractor in america clean major college campus after contracting clean stanford university.

when morris rosenberg died in 1935, oldest son theodore ted rosenberg became president , younger son sydney joined company in 1937. ted purchased electrical company in same year , abm cleaned navy ships , installed wiring on water buffalo amphibious vehicles during world war ii. end of war, abm had grown 17 offices in u.s. , canada.

1945–1999

abm’s growth continued throughout post-war years , company went public in 1962 in over-the-counter market ted serving chairman , sydney ceo. ted remained involved abm until death in 2010 serving on board of directors , late sydney rosenberg retired director in december 1997.

in 1965, abm went over-the-counter stock market being listed on american stock exchange, known nyse amex equities. in late 1960s, abm acquired companies later known ampco system parking, commair mechanical, amtech elevator services , amtech lighting services. in 1971, abm made debut on new york stock exchange under ticker symbol abm. abm engineering established in 1990s , received iso 9002 certification in 1999. end of 1999, abm employed on 55,000 people , reported annual sales revenue on $1.6 billion.

2000–2009

henrik slipsager became president , chief executive officer of abm industries in november 2000. divestitures made including selling amtech elevator in 2003 , commair mechanical in 2005. abm acquired lakeside building maintenance in 2002; security services of america in 2004; , 4 janitorial companies—colin service systems in northeast; initial cleaning services janitorial operations in maryland; hgo in philadelphia; , brandywine building services in delaware, southeast pennsylvania , south new jersey area.

in 2010, abm industries , ceo, henrik slipsager, featured during second season of cbs reality show undercover boss. later year, abm acquired linc group, llc, known tlg, $300 million. in 2010, abm acquired select parking assets l&r group of companies , of assets of 3 parking companies: 5 star parking, network parking company ltd., , system parking, inc.

in may 2012, abm purchased tegg franchise operations including currentsafe. in november 2012, abm acquired atlanta-based airserv corp. $158 million in cash, acquired hha services, food , facility service provider hospitals, healthcare systems, long-term care facilities , retirement communities.

abm became official cleaning services company of los angeles convention center in december 2013. company services aeg-affiliated venues such staples center in los angeles, sprint center in kansas city, o2 arena in london, , others.
