merritt s writings heavily influenced h. rider haggard, robert w. chambers, helena blavatsky , gertrude barrows bennett (writing francis stevens), merritt having emulated bennett s earlier style , themes. merritt s stories typically revolve around conventional pulp magazine themes: lost civilizations, hideous monsters, etc. heroes gallant irishmen or scandinavians, villains treacherous germans or russians , heroines virginal, mysterious , scantily clad.


what sets merritt apart typical pulp author, however, lush, florid prose style , exhaustive, @ times exhausting, penchant adjective-laden detail. merritt s fondness micro-description nicely complements pointillistic style of bok s illustrations.



the metal monster inaugurated argosy all-story weekly (august 7, 1920)


merritt s first fantasy story published in 1917, through dragon glass in november 14 issue of frank munsey s all-story weekly. other short stories , serial novels followed in munsey magazines all-story, argosy all-story, , argosy: people of pit (1918), moon pool (1918), conquest of moon pool (1919), 3 lines of old french (1919), metal monster (1920), face in abyss (1923), ship of ishtar (1924), 7 footprints satan (1927), snake mother (1930), burn witch burn! (1932), dwellers in mirage (1932), , creep, shadow! (1934). meanwhile, rather few of stories appeared elsewhere: pool of stone god (in own american weekly, 1923), woman of wood (weird tales, 1926), metal emperor (science , invention, 1927), , drone man (fantasy magazine, 1934).


merritt contributed round robin story challenge beyond lovecraft, robert e. howard, c. l. moore, , frank belknap long.


the fox woman , blue pagoda (1946) combined unfinished story conclusion written merritt s friend hannes bok. fox woman , other stories (1949) collected same fragment, minus bok s conclusion, merritt s short stories. book black wheel published in 1948, after merritt s death; written bok using unpublished material well. both these books illustrated bok , published small press new collectors group in hardcover.


after merritt s death, sam moskowitz discovered number of poems among papers. though may have been written other authors, credited merritt when published.
