wood started studying medicine @ medical department of university of pennsylvania in 1859, , graduated in 1862, having presented thesis on enteric fever . while still student, wood wrote first scientific paper, reporting on carboniferous flora of united states. served several internships in hospitals, , acted surgeon northern army during american civil war, including spell @ front-line fairfax seminary general hospital.


after civil war, wood supplemented income teaching privately @ medical school. awarded chair of botany @ university, , elected clinical lecturer in nervous diseases @ medical school in 1873, later rising clinical professor. made professor of materia medica , pharmacy in 1876, , added general therapeutics title later year. upon retirement in 1907, wood granted title of emeritus professor of therapeutics.


wood member of various scientific societies, including american physiological society , national academy of sciences, having joined latter in 1879, same year cleveland abbe, william g. farlow , willard gibbs. awarded honorary degrees lafayette college, yale university , university of pennsylvania.
