swithun s feast day in england on 15 july , in norway (and formerly in medieval wales) on 2 july. moved grave indoor shrine in old minster @ winchester in 971. body later split between number of smaller shrines. head detached and, in middle ages, taken canterbury cathedral. peterborough abbey had arm. main shrine transferred new norman cathedral @ winchester in 1093. installed on feretory platform above , behind high altar. retrochoir built in 13th century accommodate huge numbers of pilgrims wishing visit shrine , enter holy hole beneath him. empty tomb in ruins of old minster popular visitors. shrine moved retrochoir in 1476. demolished in 1538 during english reformation. modern representation of stands on site.


the shrine of swithun @ winchester supposedly site of numerous miracles in middle ages. Æthelwold of winchester ordered monks stop whatever doing , head church praise god every time miracle happened. story exists monks @ point got fed this, because had wake , go church 3 or 4 times each night, decided stop going. st swithun appeared in dream (possibly 2 people) , warned them if stopped going church, miracles cease. person (or persons) warned monks dream had, , monks caved in , decided go church each time miracle happened again.
