mary island light station opened in 1903, , 1 of series of staffed lights established u.s. government guide ships through treacherous waters of southeast alaska s inside passage. in 1937, concrete lighthouse , fog signal building replaced original wood tower. situated behind light 2 lightkeeper houses housed coast guard lightkeepers. 1 of houses burned down in 1965(?); other house moved off island nearby ketchikan, alaska.
in 1969 station automated , radio beacon removed. no other buildings , structures @ station stand today, other outhouse.
actually, northern of 2 keepers dwellings moved in 1964. southern dwelling used 4 man crew until station decommissioned in 1969, , in 1970 dwelling moved.
it listed on national register of historic places mary island light station in 2005.
