in november, 2012, mccallum began creating body of portraits depicting defendants standing trial before international courts titled weights , measures, project began in partnership coalition international criminal court in unique capacity organization’s year-long artist-in-residence. project consists of oil paintings portraying individuals standing trial before international criminal court ad hoc international tribunals preceded it, such special court sierra leone, extraordinary chambers in courts of cambodia, international criminal tribunal rwanda, , international criminal tribunal former yugoslavia. according interview msnbc, paintings monumental formal portraits, referencing classical, 19th-century approach portraiture challenges viewers reconsider harmful influence these powerful men had on communities.

the manhole cover project: gun legacy, 1996
before formation of mccallum + tarry partnership, mccallum produced several major solo works. among notable manhole cover project, community-based public art project commissioned wadsworth atheneum , childhood injury prevention center of hartford, connecticut. artwork explored unique role of gun , gun violence in history of hartford, city both site original manufacturing plants of colt family , experiences of highest rates of gun-related deaths in united states. project consists of 228 manhole covers cast melted metal of 11,194 guns confiscated hartford police force january 1, 1992 july 31, 1996. mccallum emblazoned each manhole cover words “made 172 lbs of confiscated guns” , common epitaph “vincit qui patitur,” translated can mean either “he perseveres victorious” or “he suffers conquers.” juxtaposition of declaration of ownership latin phrase, colt family motto, ironically contrasts hartford’s collective responsibility gun violence history of gun manufacturing. complete project, included recordings of local student testimony, curated james rondeau , installed @ wadsworth atheneum in hartford.
