Noise during high winds Beetham Tower, Manchester



a humming noise emanating tower has been heard in hulme. (hulme arch bridge pictured in foreground)


the building has become notorious intermittent hum, or howling, heard in windy weather, emanating roof s glass blade, , first reported in may 2006 – weeks after tower opened. skyscraper intended 50 storeys high rather 47, wind load tests showed sway because of slender shape , glass blade façade overrun caused height reduction has been blamed noise.


the sound has been heard 300 metres away. close standard musical pitch of b3 (approximately 246.94 hertz) , has been compared ufo landing . noise affected production of coronation street. work reduce or eradicate noise took place in 2006, 2007 , 2010. foam pads installed in 2006, aluminium nosing in 2007 , further work done in february 2010, attempts eradicate noise permanently have been unsuccessful.


in january 2012, after strong winds caused loud humming, architect, lives @ top of building, apologised. suggested decorative glass blade removed solve problem. of 2015, noise issue still remains, , building has own parody accounts on twitter, angry beetham , happy beetham , each claim responsibility when howling begins. humming noise occurred again during storm doris in february 2017.
