the main building of german national library in leipzig built 1914–1916 after plans of architect oskar pusch. impressive facade 160 m long , faces deutscher platz (german plaza). building opened on october 19, 1916. site of library had been donated city of leipzig, while friedrich august iii, king of saxony provided funds building. on facade, portraits of otto von bismarck, johann wolfgang von goethe , johannes gutenberg displayed. statues represent technology, justice, philosophy, medicine etc. central reading room contains picture ludwig von hofmann, depicting arcadia in art nouveau-style. staircase displays mural showing founders of german library. library contains museum books , letters. extension completed in 2010.
