carew associated extravagant two-tiered tomb monument in chapel of st john evangelist in exeter cathedral, of primary commemorative subjects uncle, sir gawen carew (c.1508–1584), , sir gawen s third wife, elizabeth née norwich (d. 1594), lady of bedchamber elizabeth i. monument erected in 1589, , heavily restored in 1857. in addition effigies of sir gawen , elizabeth, displays strapwork decoration , heraldry, including 27 shields containing 52 distinct coats of arms marshalled in total of 359 impalements , quarterings. whole forms elaborate shrine carew ancestry , kinship .


a prominent latin inscription formerly on monument s pediment explicitly commemorated sir peter, lost. began hic scitus est praeter nobilis vir petrus carew eques auratus ... ( here lies illustrious man peter carew, knight ... ), raising possibility body, or token part of it, recovered battlefield @ glenmalure , returned exeter burial.


a third effigy, occupying recess @ base of monument, dressed in armour , posed in cross-legged attitude suggestive of 14th century; , has long been believed represents sir peter in guise of fallen warrior. identification supported painted inscription, survives in restored form running around 3 sides of cornice, , alludes ... sir peter carew knyght, under figured ... . however, inscription not original monument (it can date no earlier 1605), , appears considerably more cross-legged figure intended represent adam montgomery de carew, semi-legendary progenitor of carew family.
