the torlakian dialects intermediate between eastern , western branches of south slavic, , have been variously described, in whole or in parts, belonging either group. in 19th century, classification hotly contested between serbian , bulgarian writers. in addition, there have been disputes regarding whether torlakian dialects in macedonia, dialects in macedonia, belonged bulgarian or separate language.

most notable serbian linguists (like pavle ivić , asim peco) classify torlakian old-shtokavian dialect, referring prizren-timok dialect.



serbian linguist pavle ivić, in textbook of serbo-croatian dialectology (1956), treated prizren-timok dialect zone part of overall shtokavian zone.
serbian linguist aleksandar belić classified prizren-timok dialect fundamentally serbian , claimed western bulgarian dialects serbian.
croatian linguist milan rešetar classified svrljig dialect (torlak) different group shtokavian.

bulgarian linguists

bulgarian scientists such benyo tsonev, gavril zanetov , krste misirkov classified torlakian dialect of bulgarian language. noted manner of articles, loss of of cases, etc. today bulgarian linguists (stoyko stoykov, rangel bozhkov) classify torlakian belogradchik-tran dialect of bulgarian, , claim should classified outside shtokavian area. stoykov further argued torlakian dialects have grammar closer bulgarian , indicative of them being bulgarian.


macedonian linguists

in macedonian dialectology, torlakian varieties spoken in macedonia (kumanovo, kratovo , kriva palanka dialects) classified part of northeastern group of macedonian dialects.


balkan sprachbund

the torlakian dialects, bulgarian , macedonian, display many properties of balkan linguistic area, set of structural convergence features shared other languages of balkans such albanian , aromanian. in terms of areal linguistics, have therefore been described part of prototypical balkan slavic area, opposed other parts of serbo-croatian, peripherally involved in convergence area.
