the 1908 race in berlin saw fall of balloon conqueror, flown a. holland forbes , augustus post. conqueror largest balloon entered in race, standing 80 feet high , gas capacity of 80,000 cubic feet. before race forbes had attempted lengthen balloon s appendix give team strategic advantage. instead balloon hit fence after take off, lost 2 ballast bags, ascended rapidly , ripped open 3 minutes race. pair slashed off ballast fell 3,000 feet. decent slowed balloon s fabric caught in netting , formed rough parachute. took hold of ring above them , lifted feet basket smashed through tiled roof of house in berlin suburb of friedenau. both men , instruments survived intact.

on september 12, 1995, 3 gas balloons participating in race entered belarusian air space. despite fact competition organizers had informed belarusian government race in may , flight plans had been filed, mil mi-24b attack helicopter of belarusian air force shot down 1 balloon, killing 2 american citizens, alan fraenckel , john stuart-jervis. of balloons forced land while third landed safely on 2 hours after initial downing. crews of 2 balloons fined entering belarus without visa , released. belarus has neither apologized nor offered compensation deaths.


on september 29, 2010, 2004 trophy-winning american team of richard abruzzo , carol rymer davis went missing in thunderstorms on adriatic sea. on september 30, usa retrieval crew suggested balloon may have ditched in sea or have been destroyed lightning. debris found on october 1 search crews race control determined not missing balloon. despite this, organizers later stated final calculated rate of descent of balloon had been 50 miles per hour (80 km/h), , team s survival unlikely . search missing pair called off on october 4. balloon s cabin containing bodies recovered italian fishing boat on december 6.
