the proposed canal, again surveyed in 1790s taken schuylkill canal (1822) running w-e reading philadelphia (allowing large shipments of coal philadelphia), provided water route between susquehanna river , delaware river. using canal, manufacturies in philadelphia , new jersey ship goods west newly settled lands west of gaps of allegheny, out midwest. bundled in part of visionary main line of public works omnibus legislation, improvements along tulpehocken creek engineering navigations provided half length of final union canal.
the creek impounded flood control above reading earthen blue marsh dam (see blue marsh state park) completed in 1979 u.s. army corps of engineers form blue marsh lake reservoir. bottom-release design of dam allows discharge of cold water @ constant temperature, resulting in ideal habitat rainbow trout , brown trout, stocked annually in stream.
