the so-called sympathetic seattle strike attempted revolution. there no violence not alter fact... intent, openly , covertly announced, overthrow of industrial system; here first, everywhere... true, there no flashing guns, no bombs, no killings. revolution, repeat, doesn t need violence. general strike, practised in seattle, of weapon of revolution, more dangerous because quiet. succeed, must suspend everything; stop entire life stream of community... say, puts government out of operation. , there revolt–no matter how achieved.



between strike s announcement , beginning, on february 4, u.s. senate voted expand work of overman judiciary subcommittee investigating german spies bolshevik propaganda. committee launched month of hearings on february 11, day strike collapsed. sensational report detailed bolshevik atrocities , threat of domestic agitators bent on revolution , abolition of private property. labor radicalism represented seattle general strike fit neatly conception of threat american institutions faced.
