following 1945
after second world war, dn&sr returned being rural backwater line. @ railway nationalisation in 1948, line, part of former gwr, became part of western region of british railways. on 2 april 1950, line south of enborne junction transferred southern region, putting under same direct management south western main line.
the disused line between compton , blewbury on 40 years after closure
passenger numbers on dn&sr declined throughout 1950s, although goods traffic remained healthy - chemical , oil traffic , fawley oil refinery.
closure passengers
the decline in passenger usage on line led proposals closure, , section between newbury , shawford junction closed passenger trains after last train on 5 march 1960. in fact due congestion @ winchester city station, chesil used short workings between southampton , winchester although station officially closed during summer period in 1960 , 1961. 3 return workings operated daily, operated diesel-electric multiple units of type 204. final service on 11 september 1961;
the northern section of line, between didcot , newbury closed on 10 september 1962. closure preceded publication of beeching report, reshaping of british railways, published in march 1963.
closure goods
goods trains remained, goods facilities @ intermediate stations gradually closed 1962, leaving through goods services until closure 9 august 1964. line closed south of newbury in 1965 , north of newbury on 19 october 1967. parts of railway s course , earthworks used a34 road between newbury , winchester. road closely follows railway s former course. in villages formerly served railway, such sutton scotney, remains of bridges , earthworks still standing, , indeed of northern section between didcot , newbury still entirely extant.
re-opening campaign
a pressure group called didcot, newbury & southampton railway revival campaigning re-opening of line in 3 stages both passenger , freight traffic. in addition diversions original route due redevelopment, require modification or replacement of existing structures , bridges accommodate both w10 freight loading gauge , overhead electrification , modification of cutting , embankment slopes meet modern infrastructure requirements.
