the river rises in forest of bowland in central lancashire, 2 distinct tributaries, tarnbrook wyre , marshaw wyre, confluence near village of abbeystead. in 1984 pumping station, built below confluence part of water transfer scheme in 1980s, location of abbeystead disaster, explosion in 16 people killed , further 22 injured.
from abbeystead, river flows south through dolphinholme garstang, lancaster canal crosses on small aqueduct. 1 mile south, @ catterall, meets first major tributary, river calder. river turns westwards, flowing through st michael s on wyre joined second major tributary, river brock. becomes tidal below weir @ st michael s.
it crossed toll bridge (normal fee 50 pence) @ cartford, between little eccleston , out rawcliffe. former toll bridge, shard bridge, close poulton-le-fylde, has been rebuilt , free. pedestrian ferry runs between fleetwood , knott end ferry isle of man no longer runs.
major industry existed @ former ici site @ burn naze, close estuary of river. alkali works taking brine mines , wells across river in , around preesall. later processes undertaken on site included dealing vinyl chloride monomer, although later moved runcorn , ici activity on site ceased. industrial activity number of various companies continues river, albeit on reduced scale.
the area around burn naze on western side of wyre estuary formerly known bergerode, believed old english term shallow harbour , beor grade.
from skippool, downstream of shard bridge, fleetwood, banks of river form wyre estuary country park. facilities exist on western bank. park has headquarters @ stanah. has been recipient of green flag award.
fleetwood @ mouth of river major fishing port until latter part of 20th century. wyre dock built there between 1869 , 1877. decline in size of fleet, of dock complex has subsequently been converted marina , adjacent freeport shopping village.
the river drains total catchment area of approximately 175 square miles (450 km²). tidal portion of river below cartford bridge drains catchment area of approximately 125 square miles (320 km).
