lithuanian mead company

the place has been known since end of 14th century (in 1375 mentioned in teutonic knights chronicles staghelisken, in 1385 stakelisken). since 1513 town, , in 1586 first church built.

after reforms of great sejm, on 16 january 1792 monarch stanisław august poniatowski granted town magdeburg rights. @ time city awarded coat of arms.

the current coat of arms granted presidential decree on 18 december 1997.
