in 1961, booth cast in title role on nbc situation comedy hazel, based on ted key s popular cartoon panel saturday evening post domineering yet endearing housemaid named hazel burke works baxter family. series starred don defore george baxter, whitney blake dorothy missy baxter , bobby buntrock baxters young son harold (whom hazel called sport ). upon premiere, hazel immediate hit audiences , drew high ratings.


in 1963, booth told associated press, @ height of hazel s popularity, liked playing hazel first time read 1 of scripts, , see possibilities of character—the comedy take care of itself. job give heart. hazel never bores me. besides, s insurance policy. on course of five-year run, booth won 2 primetime emmy awards work in series , nominated third. booth 1 of few performers win 3 major entertainment awards (oscar, tony, emmy).

later career , retirement

shortly after end of hazel, booth appeared in television production of glass menagerie aired on anthology series cbs playhouse. won critical acclaim performance , nominated primetime emmy award.


booth s final broadway appearances in revival of noël coward s play hay fever , musical lilies, both in 1970. in 1971, returned chicago star opposite gig young in revival of harvey @ blackstone theater. in 1973, booth returned episodic television in abc series touch of grace. series based on british sitcom love of ada. touch of grace canceled after 1 season.


in 1970, name listed voice of tanta kringle, in santa claus coming town. voice joan gardner.


in 1974, booth provided voice character of mrs. claus in animated television special year without santa claus. booth s final acting role after retired home in cape cod.
