in december 1624, king s men got trouble sir henry herbert, master of revels, because performed play, spanish viceroy, without first obtaining herbert s license. step bound them trouble: herbert s job oversee , censor every play acted in london theatres, , zealous in doing job, maintaining authority, , collecting fees.

(his cook mistook manuscript collection scrap paper, , used lighting fires , lining pie pans. 50 manuscripts, many of them unique copies of plays, destroyed.)

on 9 september 1653, stationer humphrey moseley entered large number of plays stationers register; 1 of dramas registered on date titled spanish viceroy, or honour of women. appear indicate massinger reworked 1624 spanish viceroy new form, licensed performance in 1628 honour of women.

moseley, however, had habit of skimping on registration fees deliberately confusing titles , subtitles, , registering 2 plays price of one. did lovers progress, bashful lover, guardian, , woman, other plays in massinger canon. there no guarantee spanish viceroy , honour of women same play after all. scholars have been divided on issue of whether these titles refer 1 play, or two.
