montceaux known former château, henri ii gave catherine de medici in 1556, earliest building project. building consisted of central pavilion housing straight staircase, , 2 wings pavilion @ each end. catherine wanted cover alley in garden henry played pall-mall, form of croquet. commission, philibert de l orme built grotto set on base made natural rock, guests watch games while taking refreshments. work completed in 1558 has not survived. given henri iv marie de medici, château ceased used royal residence after 1640, , had fallen ruin time demolished revolutionary decree in 1798. ruins remain, chapel , buildings of forecourt, transformed private dwellings; parts of east wing farm buildings.


the château listed monument historique since 2005 french ministry of culture.
