synopsis

place , time: jerusalem , surrounding desert, 10th century bc.


act 1: hall in solomon’s palace

sulamith, daughter of high priest, anxiously waiting fiancé, assad, return court diplomatic assignment plan arrival of queen of sheba court of king solomon. couple scheduled marry following day. upon return palace, assad meets solomon , reveals him has fallen in love mysterious woman among cedar forests of lebanon , not love sulamith. before solomon can reply, queen of sheba arrives entourage. greets king, pulls veil, revealing assad in fact mysterious woman had met on journey. queen, however, pretends not know assad confusion. after queen leaves, solomon counsels assad not pursue infatuation continue marriage sulamith.


act 2: garden of palace @ night

the queen of sheba has slipped away social gathering being held in honor inside palace. reflects on assad s impending marriage, astaroth, slave, informs assad nearby , proceeds lure assad mistress seductive oriental vocalise ( magische töne ). assad , queen engage in fervent conversation climaxes in passionate duet , embrace. guardian of temple arrives @ daybreak , disrupts tryst call sons of israel pray.


the wedding party arrives , assad , sulamith married in front of ark of covenant when queen appears give wedding present. queen continues treat assad stranger throws him distress. commits blasphemy referring queen god, causing uproar ends wedding ceremony. assad led off await punishment, execution.


act 3: court of king solomon

celebrations in honour of queen of sheba continue performance of bienentanz der almeen, ballet, , bacchanal. worried assad s fate, queen pleads solomon give assad mercy. refuses , queen leaves plotting revenge. sulamith, along companions, enter court singing mournful song. pleads assad s life spared in aria culminates large ensemble. still unmoved, solomon replies ominous prophecy sulamith s fate. distraught, leaves palace desert bewail impending future.


act 4: vicinity of sulamith s desert retreat

assad has been banished solomon desert. queen of sheba seeks him out attempt convince him come her kingdom. finds him alone, not far sulamith s retreat, , tries seduce him. rejects advances , in bitter soliloquy reveals regret , desire death might redeem offense against god. assad prays sulamith, during time engulfed in violent sandstorm. later found barely alive sulamith , companions. begs forgiveness, bestows before dies in arms.
