between 12th , 14th centuries many towns in poland adopted so-called magdeburg rights promoted towns development , trade. rights granted king on occasion of arrival of migrants. some, integrated larger community, such merchants settled there, greeks , armenians. adopted aspects of polish culture kept orthodox faith. since middle ages, polish culture, influenced west, in turn radiated east, beginning long , uneasy process of cultural assimilation.
