due increases in industrial output , in trade in copper, zinc, iron , tinplate combined developments in shipping (big steamships replacing smaller sailing vessels) late 19th century swansea s harbour in desperate need of expansion. swansea harbour trust (sht) commissioned construction of prince of wales dock, first on east side of river. opened in 1881 prince , princess of wales (later edward vii , queen alexandra), completed in 1882, , expanded in 1898. north quay frontage let great western railway, neath , brecon railway , rhondda , swansea bay railway, linked dulais valley , rhondda valley coalfields directly docks. in addition shunting locomotives operated sht, further engines provided powlesland , mason 1903 onwards.
