the cape town wireless user group has been around since 2005 small network between friends. since has grown citywide network. ctwug has on 1500 user sites around cape town - spanning way houtbay stellenbosch , helderberg. ctwug non-profit organisation geared towards community based wireless networking focus promote use , understanding of wireless equipment in order build citywide free wireless network. building of network forms social , interactive community people interest in expanding , improving network donate time, money , equipment group.
ctwug runs many network enhancements, including gametime system stops bulk traffic during hours gaming , other high-priority network uses. ctwug puts lot of priority in making sure network usable many applications , uses possible.

the durban wireless community founded in december 2004 group of people interested in 802.11 a/b/g wireless technology in durban, third populous city in south africa. first meeting in january 2005 had 4 attendees. group has 200 people on mailing list , 15 live nodes on network spanning bluff umbilo, morningside, town, tollgate , westville. goals of non-profit group, free join , open all, include educating public wireless technology, , learning more technology. durban wireless community has close ties jawug.

the potchefstroom community network non-profit grassroots effort members of community provide broadband network between members, using inexpensive off-the-shelf (wifi) radio networking equipment. network operates in license-exempt 2.4 ghz frequency spectrum.
