the stadium structure retrofitted , overhauled in 1990s. seats reserved , either aluminum benches backs, or bucket style seats arm rests. lower half of stadium, built pre-existing ravine, enclosed horseshoe-shaped open end faces southwest , offers views of downtown bakersfield , southern end of san joaquin valley. consequently, offers ideal setting track events there minimal amount of wind on floor of stadium interferes events , acceptance of records prevailing northwesterly winds blow on nearby bluffs , above track , field surface. consequently, winds seldom affect games or track events. upper decks built of steel-reinforced concrete , sit opposite each other, overlooking respective sidelines. on top of each upper deck 4 light standards 28 lights on each standard provide field lighting. lights last replaced , upgraded in late 1980s , offer brilliantly lit playing surface. home-side (eastern) upper deck features enclosed, partitioned press box rooms each team s coaching staff, radio broadcasts, , media.


teams dress in nearby dr. romain clerou field house, located hill field next gym , swimming pool complex. field house contains b.c. s practice , game locker room , offers adjacent locker room visiting team showers. teams opt use larger men s locker room in gym when visiting.

the field , stadium unusual in not on traditional north-south axis goal post goal post. due being built pre-existing ravine axis of field runs @ approximate northeast-southwest angle. northeast end of stadium closed top of ravine filled in build parking lot concourse connecting each side of stadium. football fields built on north-south axis press box on western sideline press box not looking setting sun. memorial stadium s press box built sun sets left-front. press box built on side overlook track s finish line built on eastern side of stadium due closed end on north end of stadium. if finish line on western side out of view of of spectators , press box have indirect angle of observation. because of emphasis on track , field scoreboard operator , still positioned @ finish line on field near northern 30-yard line. necessitates use of spotter on roof of press box relay down, distance, , yard line scoreboard operator walkie-talkie. quirk due odd angle of stadium naming of 2 seating areas. campus side of stadium officially called northern side , mt. vernon avenue side called southern side. people refer campus side western side , mt. vernon avenue side eastern side. because stadium built prior americans disabilities act there no elevators or escalators. 64 steps bottom row top row of lower deck. there press box need go behind superstructure enter steps upper deck mezzanine, go entrance seating area, go aisle press box, tedious workout! press box partitioned 2 coaches booths separated george pavletich memorial radio booth named longtime kern-1410 radio play-by-play announcer george pavletich. main room sectioned upper , lower seating area media p.a. announcer stationed here. there small bathroom on side of press box. roof of press box used film games from, has been used broadcast live local television coverage of b.c. football games from, , used broadcast live internet webcasts visiting teams.


adjacent memorial stadium s playing surface, beyond open end, 100-yard (91 m) long practice field football team holds practices. practice field has hosted football clinics, bakersfield blitz football practices, native american pow-wows, , carnivals.
