the neighborhood has active community group, formed in 2010, known longfellow community association. lca has more 100 members , 5 strong committees working on various community interests , led coordinators/co-coordinators. group has formed alliances ncpc, local schools , businesses, urban releaf, councilperson’s office , more. many artists live in neighborhood, among them, famous metalsmith , burning man art car creator jon sarriugarte. many new restaurants have started in recent economic boom post 2008 (salsipuedes, birdland jazzista social club, propaganda) areas of neighborhood (particularly along market/west , 45th street) continue troubled violence , frequent daytime shootings.
