stann began fighting career in 2006 while still serving on active duty, using accumulated leave take time off training , fights.

on march 26, 2008, stann defeated doug marshall via ko become wec light heavyweight champion. victory, stann s mma record reached 6–0, 5 victories in wec.


in august 2008, stann lost title in first defense, in rematch against steve cantwell (a loss avenged year later).

in 2008, zuffa announced plans merge wec s 185-lb , 205-lb weight classes ufc counterparts, allowing wec concentrate on lighter weight classes (which merged ufc well).


stann scheduled make ufc debut on december 10, 2008, @ ufc: fight troops show, held @ army base of fort bragg, north carolina, forced withdraw card due foot injury sustained in training. instead, faced krzysztof soszynski @ ufc 97 in montreal, quebec, canada, on april 18, 2009. in first round, soszynski locked stann in kimura, forcing him tap out first time in career. stann later stated in issue of ufc magazine that, because of previous military commitments, unable adequately prepare himself grappling-based aspects of fight, contributed loss.


on september 16, 2009, @ ufc fight night: diaz vs. guillard, stann once again faced steve cantwell in rubber match. stann go on defeat cantwell via unanimous decision (30–27, 30–27, 29–28). first time fight decision in professional career.


stann defeated ufc newcomer rodney wallace on december 5, 2009, @ ultimate fighter 10 finale unanimous decision.


stann faced ufc newcomer phil davis on february 6, 2010, @ ufc 109, losing via unanimous decision. following fight, stann revealed drop 185 lbs. middleweight division.


stann made middleweight debut against mike massenzio on august 1, 2010, @ ufc on versus 2. stann claimed first ever submission victory, catching massenzio in triangle choke midway through final round, in bout earned fight of night honors.


stann fought in co-main event of ufc 125 on new years day. defeated chris leben first-round tko stoppage. win, became second man defeat leben way of strikes, first being former ufc middleweight champion anderson silva.


stann scheduled face former pride middleweight champion wanderlei silva on may 28, 2011, @ ufc 130. however, silva voiced reluctance face stann , replaced former sengoku middleweight champion jorge santiago. stann defeated santiago via tko in 2nd round. right temple sent santiago mat, followed numerous strikes stann forced stoppage.


stann fought chael sonnen on october 8, 2011, @ ufc 136 defeated via second round submission.


stann faced alessio sakara on april 14, 2012, @ ufc on fuel tv: gustafsson vs. silva. after knocking down sakara knees clinch, stann utilized heavy ground-and-pound, delivering short elbows , hammerfists knocked sakara out. stann awarded victory @ 2:26 of first round. after stann delivered knockout blow, sat , motioned ref sakara out, rather delivering unnecessary (and potentially damaging) blows before ref jump in , stop fight. stann s actions highly praised both media , fighters, ufc light heavyweight champion jon jones being quoted saying brian stann s actions sport. ufc president dana white issued praise stann s actions in cage, calling him 1 of classiest people on earth! .


stann expected face hector lombard on august 4, 2012, @ ufc on fox 4. however, stann forced out of bout, citing shoulder injury.


stann next faced michael bisping on september 22, 2012, @ ufc 152, losing unanimous decision.


on march 3, 2013, @ ufc on fuel tv 8, long-awaited fight between stann , wanderlei silva happened, in light-heavyweight division showdown. stann lost fight via ko in second round, in bout featured back-and-forth action, earning both participants fight of night honors.


retirement

on special edition of ariel helwani s mma hour on july 11, 2013, stann announced retirement mixed martial arts competiton. upon retiring, stann became analyst , commentator fox sports , ufc. in august 2017, stann announced leaving job fox , ufc become real estate executive.
