Orbit Eris (dwarf planet)
seen earth, eris makes small loops in sky through constellation of cetus
the orbit of eris (blue) compared of saturn, uranus, neptune, , pluto (white/gray). arcs below ecliptic plotted in darker colors, , red dot sun. diagram on left polar view whereas diagrams on right different views ecliptic.
eris has orbital period of 558 years. maximum possible distance sun (aphelion) 97.65 au, , closest (perihelion) 37.91 au. came perihelion between 1698 , 1699, aphelion around 1977, , return perihelion around 2256 2258. eris , moon second distant known objects in solar system, after v774104, apart long-period comets , space probes. approximately forty known tnos, notably 2006 sq372, 2000 oo67 , sedna, though closer sun eris, have greater average orbital distances eris s semimajor axis of 67.7 au.
eris s orbit highly eccentric, , brings eris within 37.9 au of sun, typical perihelion scattered objects. within orbit of pluto, still safe direct interaction neptune (29.8–30.4 au). pluto, on other hand, other plutinos, follows less inclined , less eccentric orbit and, protected orbital resonance, can cross neptune s orbit. possible eris in 17:5 resonance neptune, though further observations required check hypothesis. unlike 8 planets, orbits lie in same plane earth s, eris s orbit highly inclined: tilted @ angle of 44 degrees ecliptic. in 800 years, eris closer sun pluto time (see graph @ right).

as of february 2016, eris has apparent magnitude of 18.7, making bright enough detectable amateur telescopes. 200-millimeter (7.9 in) telescope ccd can detect eris under favorable conditions. reason had not been noticed until steep orbital inclination; searches large outer solar system objects tend concentrate on ecliptic plane, bodies found.
because of high inclination of orbit, eris passes through few constellations of traditional zodiac; in constellation cetus. in sculptor 1876 until 1929 , phoenix 1840 until 1875. in 2036 enter pisces , stay there until 2065, when enter aries. move northern sky, entering perseus in 2128 , camelopardalis (where reach northernmost declination) in 2173.
