william of Æbelholt
the monastery first established on eskilsø island in roskilde fjord in 1104. while no remains of wooden abbey have survived, stone abbey church there still remains, though in ruins. 24 meters long , had nave, choir, , apse in romanesque style. monks became unruly , bishop absalon of roskilde, determined obtain new augustinian superior, sent friend, william, abbot of abbey of sainte-geneviève in paris. when william arrived in 1165 3 french canons there 6 religious left @ eskilsø, 2 of whom dismissed when refused submit new rule.

after reformation in 1535 religious houses , income properties reverted crown. abbey church converted large parish church tjæreby , alsønderup parishes, while conventual , service buildings granted fief christoffer trundsen in 1544, provision should maintain last remaining canons under abbot anders ibsen. abbey formally dissolved in 1560; abbot ibsen sent carmelite priory in helsingør died year later.
