dam construction
the construction of dam authorized act 63 of legislature of puerto rico, known isabella public irrigation law, approved april 19, 1919.
the dam constructed starting in 1928. reservoir had initial storage capacity of 48.46 mm, or 48.46×10^ m (63.38 million cubic yards), 1999 (71 years later), capacity had been reduced 42.28 mm or 42.28 gigalitres (55.30 million cubic yards), 13% less, attributed sediment erosion. surface area of reservoir 3.42 km (1.32 sq mi) in 1999.

on september 22, 2017, @ 18:10 gmt, following hurricane maria, operators @ guajataca dam announced dam s spillway failing @ northern end of lake , result in whole dam collapsing. national weather service few minutes later urged 70,000 residents in flood area evacuated. national weather service stated dam life-threatening situation . it’s structural failure. don’t have more details, governor ricardo rosselló stated. we’re trying evacuate many people possible. rosselló ordered puerto rico national guard , police assist in evacuation effort downstream. dam lies across guajataca river form reservoir can hold 11 billion gallons of water.
