starlight theatre’s story dates 1925, year romania’s queen marie paid visit kansas city. celebrate arrival, kansas city federation of music organized showcase of local talent queen open public. while kansas citians had toyed idea of building outdoor theatre before, $7,000 showcase raised made clear kansas city had audience such performances , outdoor theatre 1 day become kansas city tradition.


profits showcase placed in city trust , proposals location of kansas city’s outdoor theatre began. 1 suggested site kansas city art institute stands, area residents disapproved of building such large structure in neighborhood. possible location north of university of missouri–kansas city, although these plans shelved because officials feared theatre compete newly completed municipal auditorium (kansas city).


after 15 years of proposals, need venue house celebrations commemorating kansas city’s 100th birthday sped process. committee chosen, swope park deemed location, , construction began on cold december day in 1949. while theatre still unfinished city’s 1950 centennial anniversary, show went on, , thousands of kansas citians flocked see historical revue of city, thrills of century. show’s success proved perfect spark of motivation completing starlight , beginning tradition of bringing broadway kansas city. community volunteers helped raise money , establish theatre policy; local craftsmen donated time finishing construction, , starlight theatre know born.


that same year (1950), starlight theatre association of kansas city, inc., formed 501(c)(3) not profit corporation operate, program , maintain professional theatre in our community.


in 1958, starlight theatre received generous boost jerry lewis. during opening night performance, lewis found distance between performer , audience limiting. proposed theatre personnel extend stage covered orchestra pit. when starlight officials explained not finance project, lewis himself paid cost. although extension temporary lewis’ show only, idea one. in 1980s stage permanently extended on orchestra pit, bringing on stage action closer audience. extension lasted until building of 10-story, climate controlled jeannette , jerome cohen community stage in 2000.


another highlight in history of starlight theatre came in 1960s production of musical mr. president. starlight’s producer, richard berger, had knack adding pizzazz shows, swayed president harry s. truman make guest appearance in opening night show. berger’s casting of truman sensation, although attack of appendicitis forced truman leave starlight ambulance during intermission.


in 1981, theatre league brought locally produced shows starlight stage. season saw grease . oliver! , camelot , , west side story . starring in these shows andrea mcardle, orson bean, noel harrison, , barry williams.


the highly successful director/choreographer team of jack allison , helen butleroff worked @ theatre 1984 1993. pair provided many innovative, crowd pleasing productions on huge starlight stage. shows included jesus christ superstar, oliver!, hair, camelot, wizard of oz, sweet charity, , west side story stars such davy jones, david cassidy, donna murphy, phyllis diller, georgia engel, roman seinkiewicz, , others. during period rob marshall, susan schulman, thom warren, , michael lichtefeld handled directing , choreography duties.


since then, starlight theatre has steadily remained staple of kansas city’s performing arts community , favorite looking summer-time family-oriented entertainment. there once 38 other self-producing outdoor theatres in u.s., today 2 major ones remain, making starlight landmark not kansas city, whole country.


the addition of jeannette , jerome cohen community stage in 2000 put roof on starlight stage , gave starlight increased technical capability making 1 of largest roadhouses in country. in addition producing own shows, starlight began presenting major national tours in 2000 bring more recent , contemporary broadway musicals kansas city share productions indoor theatres around country. starlight opened 2000 season national tour of miss saigon famous huey helicopter. shortly after starlight theatre partnered live nation, largest concert promoter in country present concert series. increased production versatility has continued make starlight theatre summer favorite residents , visitors alike.
