the team founded in 1915 siam national football team , played first unofficial match (against team of europeans) @ royal bangkok sport club stadium on 20 december of year. on 25 april 1916, king vajiravudh established football association of siam. team played first international match in 1930 against indochina national team, included both south vietnamese , french players. both siam team , governing association renamed in 1949 when siam became thailand.

thailand appeared in 1956 summer olympics in melbourne, lost great britain score of 0–9 (the largest defeat in team history) , failed advance quarterfinals. in 1965, thailand won first place in southeast asian games first time.

in 1996, thailand defeated malaysia 1–0 win asean football championship (then called tiger cup) first time. thailand favourites regain crown in 2007, 2008 , 2012 lose tight finals singapore , vietnam respectively.

thailand football team has competed 3 times in asian games, making semifinals in 1990, 1998 , 2002.

the 2007 afc asian cup finals held 7 29 july 2007. first time in history, competition co-hosted 4 nations: indonesia, malaysia, thailand , vietnam.

the 1998 tiger cup controversy

the regional 1998 asean football championship tournament perhaps infamous in respect thailand football history. in supposedly sporting event, group stage match between thailand , indonesia marred unsportsmanlike attempt. @ time both teams had qualified semi-finals, knowledge winners have face hosts vietnam, while losing team play supposedly weaker singapore. there technical incentive facing vietnam mean moving training bases ho chi minh city hanoi – none of teams wished do.

2009–2010

on 23 september 2009, bryan robson agreed become coach of thailand national team in first foray international football management. contracted manage team through 2014 world cup. on 14 november 2009, robson celebrated first competitive match in charge of team 3–1 away victory against singapore in 2011 asian cup qualifying group match. on 18 november 2009, robson suffered first loss – 1–0 defeat against singapore on home soil. in january 2010, followed 2 goalless draws jordan , iran during 2011 asian cup qualifying. on 3 march 2010, robson s thailand suffered 1–0 defeat hands of iran in tehran in final group e game, ending hopes of qualifying 2011 asian cup. on 11 august 2010, robson led thailand victory against singapore score of 1–0 on home soil. in september 2010, robson overcame bob houghton s india in friendly score of 2–1 away home. in december 2010, robson failed bring thailand past group of 2010 aff suzuki cup after managing draws against laos , malaysia , losing indonesia. resigned manager on 8 june 2011.

2011–2013

thailand regained title champion of asean football upon fourth aff championship. team did not lose @ match until second leg of finals , featured spectacular tiki-taka style 27 consecutive passes during first leg of finals against malaysia. thailand ended 12-year drought in aff suzuki cup late goals charyl chappuis(82 ) , chanathip songkrasin gave them dramatic 4–3 aggregate victory on malaysia in second leg of final @ bukit jalil national stadium. kiatisuk senamuang consequently became first person win asean football championship both player , coach. kiatisuk gained praise , credit team s recent achievements.

2016 aff championship

on first leg of finals held in bogor, thailand lost 2–1 indonesia. on secound leg of finals, thailand won indonesia 2–0 @ home. thailand scored twice through siroch chatthong on night when rajamangala stadium filled on capacity, final aggregate 3–2 thailand.

in last round, kiatisuk s men face many hard opponents, when shared same group australia, japan, saudi arabia, uae , previous opponent, iraq. once again, thailand eliminated without winning match in last round, when recorded 2 points out of ten matches.
