the first national team in kingdom existed between 2 world wars. football federation of kingdom of serbs, croats , slovenes founded in zagreb in 1919 under name jugoslovenski nogometni savez (and admitted fifa), , national team played first international game @ summer olympics in antwerp in 1920. opponent czechoslovakia, , historic starting eleven represented kingdom of scs on debut were: dragutin vrđuka, vjekoslav Župančić, jaroslav Šifer, stanko tavčar, slavin cindrić, rudolf rupec, dragutin vragović, artur dubravčić, emil perška, ivan granec, , jovan ružić. lost huge margin 0–7, nonetheless got names in history books.

the federation , football overall disrupted world war ii. after war, socialist federation formed , football federation reconstituted. 1 of founding members of uefa , organized 1976 european championship played in belgrade , zagreb. national team participated in 8 world cups , 4 euros, , won olympic football tournament in 1960 @ summer games (they finished second 3 times , third once).

with end of cold war, democratic principles introduced country brought end of titoist rule. in subsequent atmosphere, national tensions heightened. @ yugoslavia-netherlands friendly in preparation 1990 world cup, croatian crowd in zagreb jeered yugoslav team , anthem , waved dutch flags (owing resemblance croatian tricolour). dissolution of yugoslavia, team split , remaining team of federal republic of yugoslavia (fry) banned competing @ euro 92. decision made on may 31, 1992, 10 days before competition commenced.
they had finished top of qualifying group, unable play in competition due united nations security council resolution 757. place taken denmark, went on win competition. yugoslavia had been drawn top seed in group 5 of european zone in qualifying tournament 1994 world cup. fry barred competing, rendering group unusually weak.
