the university of santo tomas school senate approved establishment of rotc on 3 september 1936 making military science , tactics compulsory every able-bodied male student in university. made ust 1 of first institutions implement national defense act of commonwealth government. on 28 september of same year, officers tasked organize first cadet corps, , 700 male students constituted first batch of rotc cadets. year after, corps obtained rating of superior — highest rating military standards — in annual tactical inspection. during first inter-rotc meet, corps rated second more experienced university of philippines rotc unit. corps grew regiment (4 battalions, approximately 800 cadets) brigade numbering more 1,500 cadets. first batch of advance rotc cadets graduated in march 1939.
