the braille challenge started locally in 2000 sponsored braille institute encourage , promote students braille skills. in 2003 braille institute began partnering other organizations , formed advisory committee make braille challenge accessible kids across united states , canada. year, 200 students 28 states , 4 canadian provinces traveled participate in regional events, sending 55 finalists los angeles compete 2003 braille challenge title. participation in contest has doubled since 2003.
by 2005 institute received 775 requests preliminary contest, representing students 40 states , 6 canadian provinces. in 2009, 31 blind service agencies , schools blind , visually impaired throughout united states , canada hosting regional events. on 500 students participated regionally in 2009, national top 12 scores in each of 5 age groups scheduled compete nationally @ final round held @ braille institute in los angeles.
