a low pressure area developed on bay of campeche between october 23 , october 24, tropical storm forming on latter date. @ least 4 other ships in portion of gulf of mexico sustained appreciable structural damage. 1 ship capsized in storm hands lost except 1 seaman, picked on november 2 passing vessel. survivor said stranded on wreck 5 days, indicating ship went down on october 28. stormy weather reported near bermuda. partagás , diaz used these reports create track storm. initially, storm drifted north-northeastward , northeastward. 12:00 utc on october 26, estimated system became hurricane , intensified further peak @ winds of 90 mph (150 km/h). shortly thereafter, hurricane began accelerating east-northeastward due cold front. @ 18:00 utc on october 28, storm made landfall near st. petersburg, florida. barometric pressure of 974 mbar (28.8 inhg) observed, lowest in relation storm. storm emerged in atlantic less 6 hours later , transitioned extratropical cyclone on october 29.
