until dissolution on november 2013, public-service ràdio televisió valenciana (rtvv) main broadcaster of radio , television in valencian community. generalitat valenciana constituted in 1984 in order guarantee freedom of information of valencian people in own language.


prior dissolution, administration of rtvv under people s party (pp) had been controversial due accusations of ideological manipulation , lack of plurality. news broadcast accused of giving marginal coverage of valencia metro derailment in 2006 , indictment of president de la generalitat francisco camps in gürtel scandal in 2009. supervisors appointed pp accused of sexual harassment.


in face of increasing debt , shrinking audiences had fallen under 10 , 5% of share in recent years, rtvv announced in 2012 plan shed 70% of labour. plan nullified on 5 november 2013 national court after trade unions appealed against it. on same day, president de la generalitat alberto fabra announced rtvv closed, claiming reinstating employees untenable. on 27 november, legislative assembly passed dissolution of rtvv , employees organized take control of broadcast, starting campaign against pp. nou tv s last broadcast ended abruptly when spanish police pulled plug @ 12:19 on 29 november 2013.


having lost revenues advertisements , facing high costs termination of hundreds of contracts, critics question whether closure of rtvv has improved financial situation of generalitat, , point out plans benefit private-owned media. currently, availability of media in valencian language extremely limited. other autonomous communities in spain, including monolingual ones, have public-service broadcasters, valencian community being exception despite being fourth populated.
