on may 8, 2005, then-lieutenant stann assigned 3rd battalion, 2nd marines, commanding 2nd mobile assault platoon. during operation matador (which took place during battle of al qaim), unit ambushed insurgents while trying secure ramana bridge, near karabilah. stann , unit held out 6 days, under heavy attack, while coordinating air , tank support allowed them relieved on may 14, 2005. 42 marines in stann s platoon survived. following march, stann awarded silver star, nation s third-highest award valor in combat. part of citation reads: second lieutenant stann directed 2 casualty operations, 3 vehicle recovery operations , multiple close air support missions under enemy small arms, machine gun , mortar fire in 360-degree fight. mission shown on episode, iraq s wanted on history channel show, shootout!, in stann interviewed. actions noted president george w. bush during 1 of speeches. left active duty in marine corps of may 2008. stann commanding officer in 8th marine regiment headquarters company while continuing fight in wec.
