the anti-hindi agitation backed periyar s self-respect movement , justice party. justice party led older, established leaders kurma venkata reddy naidu , pannirselvam, did not have reputations agitators , derived power patronage. representatives in madras legislature demanded hindi teaching made optional. more militant agitators led periyar did not have patronage, derived influence activism , politics of agitation. periyar became president of justice party during course of agitation. agitation supported tamil scholars maraimalai adigal, somasundara bharathi, k. appadurai, mudiyarasan, k. a. p. viswanatham , ilakkuvanar. in december 1937, tamil saivite scholars among first announce opposition hindi teaching in saiva sidhandha maha samaja conference @ velur. women participated in agitation in large numbers. moovalur ramamirtham, narayani, va. ba. thamaraikani, munnagar azhagiyar, dr. dharmambal, malar mugathammaiyar, pattammal , seethammal of women arrested participating in agitation. on 13 november 1938, tamil nadu women s conference convened demonstrate women s support movement. despite anti-brahmin sentiments of backers of agitation, few brahmins kanchi rajagopalachari participated in movement.
