under assad government, women face extreme forms of repression, violence , discrimination. sexual assault , domestic violence occur @ high rates, little protection under law or through courts. conservative social norms restricts women s movement , participation in public life. economic opportunities had begun improve degree, though since civil war broke out economy has collapsed in many areas.
